 Least culpable |
It was a bad day. I knew it was going to be a bad day. It's becoming a bit of a habit on away trips to the big clubs. |
The day started badly as my headphones stopped working en route to work. Then I couldn't get a seat on the train - a train which reeked with the abhorrent stench of bananas. And I had no cash - thanks Halifax. So I wasn't in the best of spirits before the game.
But we did take the lead. Jamie Peacock had gone off injured and while Leeds were still reorganising, Adam Mogg created room for Olivier Charles to maintain his try-a-game record. No goal, but an early 4-0 lead. We would score again, but 47 minutes had elapsed and an avalanche of points had gone in at the other end.
Brent Webb scored twice in the first half before Mogg was binned and Dimitri Pelo went off injured, and Clinton Toopi nipped in for one making it 18-4 to the hosts at oranges. Sinfield crossed one minute after the restart and Gareth Ellis notched one from a 3rd tackle chip over the top before Mogg started a move on the Dragons 20 and some scintillating passing with Alex Chan prominent saw Mogg get up on the end of it register the Dragons only second half points.
It was one-way traffic after that. Webb completed his hat-trick, Charles dropped a bomb into Scott Donald's hands, Rob Burrow made a mockery of the shambles of a defence and Sinfield nicked one in the last minute off the back of a Casey McGuire knock-on. Sinfield was perfect on the night with the boot, kicking nine from nine.
A night to forget then. Picking the bones out, people more sober than I decided that least culpable for the defeat was Clint Greenshields. In the face of a relentless attack, he had a lot of work to do and did it well. He's the sang-et-or.net man of the match and takes three player of the season points. Andrew Bentley keeps impressing and takes two points, while despite his sin-binning, Adam Mogg finally began to show why he was an Origin player last season and takes the remaining point. All eyes now turn to the massive derby - the biggest derby in rugby league - at Cardiff next week. We will have to be much better than we were here.
