| Mitchell treble helps TO to win |
 Unlikely battering ram |
On a bright and breezy Saturday evening, Toulouse brought home the bacon from the trip to Dewsbury. Martin Mitchell was the architect, but he left the field with a painful looking knock to the ankle and, in his absence, Dewsbury threatened a comeback that looked unlikely until Nathan Wynn stepped up to the mark to seal the win.
We review the action here |
Defence dominated the first half as the action ebbed and flowed, but with neither side able to break down their determined opponents. Nathan Wynn put in a huge shot an Dominic Brambani - the Dewsbury lynchpin - as the playmakers went head to head and Bruno Orméno, playing out in the centres, put in a string of massive hits which really caught the eye. Just as the clock was winding down and it looked like remaining point-less at half time, a kick on the last was spilled by Dewsbury under good pressure from the French attack. From the scrum, the ball went left and a couple of tackles later, Martin Mitchell burrowed in for the first points of the game. Nathan converted for a 6-0 half time lead.
While we had to wait 38 minutes of the first half for a try, it was just 38 seconds into the second half when Toulouse extended their lead. The kick-off was fumbled in the in-goal by Dewsbury and they were forced to drop out. Rory Bromely fielded the kick, drove it to the line and Mitchell was up in support to take the pass and romp over under the posts. Nathan converted that and, four minutes later, stuck an enormous bomb up that hung for an age before coming back to earth where it was summarily dropped. Nathan regathered and, again, Mitchell was on hand to grab his hat-trick try.
With 53 minutes gone, Dewsbury were reduced to twelve as Pat Walker was sent to the sin bin after taking Nathan out after kicking through. Off the back of the penalty, Bromley drove to the line and stuck an arm out in a four-man tackle to add another four points. Nathan kicked a towering conversion from the sideline. Mitchell hobbled out shortly afterwards and Dewsbury got on the board as TO were still reorganising. A knock-on was seized on by the Rams and Lee Lingard sliced through to touch down. Walker had been back on for five minutes when he reduced the arrears to twelve, again profiting from a Toulouse handling error.
At twelve points, Toulouse were looking a bit wobbly and Dewsbury, rather than settling for the bonus point, seemed to fancy their chances of the win. The Toulouse line held firm and, with six minutes to go, they sealed it with Bromley's second try. Nathan was again the architect, dropping a lovely inside ball off to the full-back who crashed over. And with a couple of minutes remaining, Nathan picked off a stray pass and went 90 metres to score under the posts. He converted that, as he had done for the other five tries, bringing the curtain down on a 36-12 win.
This was a good team performance, but the real cost of it was evident afterwards. Cuts, bruises, stitches and ice-packs told the story of the effort that went in to securing the win. There were a number of good performances and Clément Bienès can count himself unlucky not to get any player of the year points. He defended well out on the wing, especially under the high ball. Bruno Orméno's massive defensive stint earns him one point, while Nathan Wynn's all-round brilliance gets him two. If there's a better player at Championship level, we've not seen him yet. But he is pipped to the sang-et-or.net man of the match award by Martin Mitchell. Yes, he bagged a hat-trick, but that's only half the reason he gets the nod. His organisation was superb, as were his sniping runs from dummy half and his value to the team was further highlighted after he was forced out of the action. If Toulouse are to make the play-offs, and make an impact in them, they'll have to hope he's not out action for too long.
